Kathy Kudler has created a chain of specialty grocery stores in southern California. However, because of a lack of management and several other issues, Kathy has opened herself up for failure if these areas are not handled correctly. Kathy has no help in her position at Kudler Fine Foods and is in serious need of a chain of command to take some of the pressure off her and bring the focus back around to customer satisfaction.

Kudler Fine Foods is a small chain of specialty grocery stores in southern California. Kathy Kudler had no experience is running this type of specialty store but because of her own interest in gourmet foods, she made the decision to open such a store in her hometown. Because of her lack of experience Kathy does all the managerial duties for three stores herself, including the ordering. Kathy believes in developing a personal relationship with her customers but because she has no help with running the three stores she is losing touch with the customers and therefore with what they want to see on the shelves. Kathy needs to be a true leader for the Kudler Fine Food chain, meaning she would be “communicating, guiding, training, coaching, and motivating others to work effectively to achieve the organization's goals and objectives,” (Nickels, McHugh, & McHugh. 2008. p. 184).
If Kathy would put a chain of command into place in each store, she would free up some of her own time and be able to reconnect with her customers. By creating her own team made up of herself a manager and possibly an assistant manager Kathy would by fulfilling the true meaning of management. Chapter seven of Understanding Business defines management as “the process used to accomplish organizational goals through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling people and other organizational resources,” (Nickels, McHugh, & McHugh. 2008. p. 182).
