LAB 1
1. Describe the function of the following pieces of safety equipment and how each might be used: (10 points)
a. Eye Wash (2 points)- The eyewash station is used for chemical splashes, if chemicals should enter the eye it should be flushed for 15-30 minutes.
b. Fire Blanket (2 points)- In the case of a small fire the fire blanket may be used. It is placed on top of the fire to smother it.
c. Shower (2 points)- The shower can be used in case of fire or chemicals coming in contact with the body. If either event occurs it should be utilized for 15-30 minutes.
d. Chemical Spill Kit (2 points) For chemical spills other than on the body you would clean up an acidic chemical with the appropriate base and for a basic chemical you would clean it with an appropriate acid to neutralize it.
e. Biological Spill Solution (2 points) Biological spills are cleaned with a solution that is 10% bleach. You must consider that all organisms carry bacteria and viruses and you must wear gloves.
2. Briefly describe a situation when each of the following waste disposal containers would be used and give examples of the waste involved: (4 points)
a. Broken Glass Container (2 points)- If you were using a graduated cylinder to measure a liquid and it slipped from your hands and broke, the glass would be swept up and placed in the broken glass container.
b. Biological Hazards Materials Container (2 points) Any time you use a biological material you would use the biological hazards materials container. For example if you were dissecting animal parts you would place all the remains in this container.
3. Metric Measurements: Perform each of the following conversions. (24 points)
a. Given that one inch = 2.54 cm. State the student's height in inches and then convert to centimeters. (4 points)- I am 66 inches and 167.64 cm
b. The width of a normal sheet of paper is 8.5 inches. Convert this length to kilometers. (4 points)- The paper is 0.0002159 kilometers.
