Laws 1 Gun Regulations and Constitutional Laws Felicia Johnson HIS 303 Professor Neihaus January 19, 2009 Laws 2 Hand guns can be very dangerous but they can also be a good form of protection. Some people use them wrongfully to harm others and that is not what they should be used for unless you are fighting in a war and that is your job to protect your country. I believe that people should be allowed to carry a hand gun as long as they have a license for it and follow the rules and regulations that come with owning a hand gun. Guns kept in a home should be kept in a safe place, locked, or maybe even unloaded. The Supreme Court has declared for the first time that the Second Amendment protects an individual right-not a collective or militia right † to keep and bear firearms for self defense. I am going to write a brief summary on gun regulations, gun violence, the need for guns, and the wrongful use of guns. Laws 3 Most Americans think the U.S. Constitution should guarantee the right to own a gun. And about half say handgun ownership should be “government † controlled.” One in five Americans owns a handgun. There positive and negative symbols to owning a handgun. “The negative, of course, is that guns are used to commit crimes.” But on the positive side you have our history, the frontier. There should be a parallel set of regulations gor guns just like it would be to have your license and drive a car. Some Americans think having a gun in the home makes it safer for the people who live there verses about one † third who feel the opposite way. Nelson Lund, an expert on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution † which deals with the right to bear arms † suggest the American people have a “common sense” approach which says they want gun laws, but not strict ones.
