Leadership and the Impact of Acquiring Talent on Organizations
In today’s global market, having the right competencies to lead organizations is essential in
business. Understanding what critical competencies are required to drive overall success in an
organization is a key component to its strategy. Organizations will struggle to be successful without
leaders who possess the requisite skills of self- awareness, vision, communication, and authenticity
amongst others. The challenge will be whether leaders can recognize and acquire the competencies
needed to manage and lead their talent base in order to remain competitive in the global market.
The acquiring of key leadership talent with the needed skills has changed over the years and this
has required organizations to reinvent themselves in order to stay competitive in the global
environment. Part of this is due to the shrinking market place where organizations that once were
predominantly in one part of the world are now in multiple countries. This has impacted how leaders
see talent and acquire talent to lead their organizations. An example of this is seen in a global company
based in the United States (NCR Corporation) where at one point this corporation had over 120,000
employees worldwide to support their global initiatives. Today, NCR has approximately 25,000
globally and this shrinkage has caused the organization to re-think how talent is utilized and deployed
in the global market. Skills that were once viewed as critical to the organization’s overall success have
since been eliminated and combined into other roles in order for them to remain competitive. With the
increase in technology the need to have duplicate roles globally was eliminated so the focus could be
on acquiring talent who exhibited multiple competencies versus a specific set for individualized roles.
