My experience working in corporate America has taught me a great deal about good and bad leadership. I have had the privilege to work with some very good leaders; who had both strong interpersonal and communications skills. I have also had the privilege to work with bad leaders. I say privilege, for them, because in order to fully understand a good leader, you sometimes will have to work with a bad one. When examining both management styles of the good and bad leader, I believe that there was one major difference in the two. I believe that the good leader had many qualities that the bad did not, but overall the good leader had excellent communication skills. As I remember various situations, I remember that I always appreciated the way that the good leader communicated with the staff and kept us up to date with what was going on. I wish I had appreciated sooner how much her communication truly impacted the success of the team. We were able to quickly solve issues because everyone was aware of what was going on. Whenever direction was needed, we never had a problem reaching leadership. This example is something that I will never forget.
I have already begun to use this experience as a model for how I work in my current position. By demonstrating similar communication skills, it has helped me to be viewed as a team leader. When confronted with hard tasks or things that others do not want to handle, I have learned to step up and take the lead. When I first entered the work force I only attempted to complete the tasks that were directly assigned to me. I was available if someone asked me for help directly, but I would never step out and volunteer. As time went by and I learned more about leadership, I began to step up and ask others if they needed help. In my recent job, I have volunteered to make spreadsheets and other materials that has help us become more efficient with our work.
