In my experience in the workplace, virtual teams are a trend as working across multiple areas of locations can be a challenge, there should be in place, protocol for leaders to process this information and use it for their team’s advantage. Although many organizations are implementing virtual teams to gain benefits, some leaders continue to have difficulty with project and team management in virtual environments, which can cause problems ranging from employee dissatisfaction and increased costs to security breaches and failed projects.
I believe that my leadership style is a blended approach using the focus on virtual team building. I think my leadership style would be best described as taking components of many different leadership styles and breaking them down into different core skills such as mentoring, relationship building, coaching, and delegating responsibility. I have found this works well in my field as a trainer because many of the participants seem to equate this closely with training and education avenues because of their same relations. In an article by Branson, Clausen, & Chung-Hsein, Calloway & Awadzi, (2008) findings show that blending management or leadership along with learning can create an atmosphere that increases not only relationships within the team of individuals working in it but also students by affecting the general atmosphere of the environment. Individuals utilizing the blended leadership strategy use the different methods of coaching, team building, and mentoring to build relationships to foster bonds and effectiveness to meet goals.
I found that my leadership style focuses on the main objective of providing communication across the different areas of virtual teams. The absence of a physical presence in virtual teams may cause many projects to succumb to failure despite the talent and advantage s of the team.
