Good Sport is based in Florida and manufacturers fitness equipment such as treadmills, bicycles, steppers, and rowers. Jason Poole started the business over 15 years ago and is now expanding in other states, as well as in marketing to fitness clubs, hotels, and hospitals. The latest trends are having Good Sport expand their products and marketing strategies. Good Sports organizational structure is different in the four departments: productions, research and development, sales, and finance. The analysis will discuss Good Sports organizational structure, culture, power and politics. All the employees of Good Sport have one thing in common, their commitment to fitness and style. The success of the company is to maintain employee morale, eliminate conflict, and make Good Sport a successful company by understanding its organizational structure.
Organizational Structure and Culture
Good Sport is based in Florida and manufactures fitness equipment such as treadmills, bikes, steppers, and rowers (Apollo Group, Inc., 2004). The CEO, Jeff Poole, has driven the company forward by improving the performance of sales, production, and the research and development (R & D) teams. At Good Sport, the organizational structure, which refers to the division of labor as well as the patterns of coordination, communication, work flow, and formal power that direct organizational activities (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005, p. 446), is based off the primary means of coordination of formal hierarchy. The formal hierarchy assigns legitimate power to individuals, who then us this power to direct work processes and allocate resources. In other words, work is coordinated through direct supervision (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005, p. 448). Good Sport has four departments: Production, R and D, Sales, and Finance. Each department has a team manager, senior manager, and vice president, which reports directly to the CEO.
