Legalization of Marijuana - Essay 2

Marijuana is the most frequently used illegal drug in the United States of America, and also in many other countries. Some people use this drug for medical purpose, and most others use it for entertainment and pleasure. In the United States, using marijuana for medical purposes is legal in 13 of the 50 states. Over 70 million Americans have tried marijuana, but does marijuana really affect your thinking process and should it be legalized. There are numerous pros and cons to marijuana being legalized, I believe that the government has no valid reason to outlaw a plant that can still survive without humans interference, especially something that is not really anymore harmless than alcohol and tobacco.
The drug marijuana or “pot” should be legalized to a certain degree in the United States. First of all, the legalization of marijuana without question would be a great source of tax revenues. Government taxation on marijuana would not only help deplete the debt of the country but it would allow law enforcement to apply the money to more serious areas of need. Law enforcement and court would now be able to focus on the more serious crimes. Tobacco and alcohol are just as harmful if not more harmful than marijuana. Pot is the least addictive of the three and is not linked to aggression or violence. Alcohol is the most addictive and can lead to death, aggression, and violent behavior. About 20,000 people die in the United States due alcohol-related crashes. These deaths constitute almost 40 percent of the total accidents each year. Tobacco products are already being banned in many public areas in many states. Tobacco is the leading cause to lung cancer in the United Sates. With legal marijuana crime and theft would be reduced, drug dealers would lose most if not all of there business and street justice such as drug disputes would decrease.
