Five months ago the states Washington and Colorado voted yes on the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. A recent poll was released on Thursday through out the U.S., according to this poll the majority of Americans agree with Washington and Colorado and think that it should not be illegal to smoke the drug, marijuana. Attorney General Eric Holder has trouble figuring out a response to the new legalization laws for marijuana. These polls gave the voters of these states good news because, sixty percent of Americans agree that the U.S. government shouldn’t enforce federal drug laws in states that have voted to leagalize pot. These polls had a general agreement between several political views that didn’t want the federal government to interfior: 64 percent were independents, 59 percent were Democrat, and 57 percent were Republicans. All together 52 percent of the people living in the U.S. say that marijuana should be legal, while 45 percent say it should be kept illegal, according to the poll in mid-March by the Pew Research Center. This was the first time in over four decades the legalization of pot won majority vote in polls.

According to these polls a lot more Americans are experimenting/using marijuana.48 percent of people say, they’ve smoked it, and don’t believe that marijuana is a “gateway” drug leading to harsher, harder drugs. According to these polls 50 percent of the “baby boomers” support the legalization, compared to the17 percent in the 90’s. But, it’s mainly younger Americans who are trying to get the drug legalized, 65 percent of adults born since 1980 back and support the idea to legalize. The poll found that support for legalizing marijuana rose by 11 points between all age groups since 2010, which is huge difference from the Gallup survey given in 1969 that only had 12 percent of people backing legalized marijuana, while 84 percent were opposed.
