Marijuana is widely used in the United states although it is and illegal substance. It does not have the same effect on the body as other hardcore drugs although it is viewed to be that way. Growing up in America people are taught at a very young age that marijuana is bad and should not be used. It is viewed as taboo and people are sent to jail for it. The legalization of marijuana would be beneficial to many americans who have health issues that require marijuana as medicine, it would also save the Government money because people that are in jail for its use would be free and the Government would make money off of taxes if it were sold in public such as tobacco or alcohol.
Marijuana has been proved though research studies that it is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. A research study from Cannabis Culture revealed that Marijuana is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol by determining the physical harm to the user, potential to addiction, and the impact of society. Alcohol came in as the 5th most harmful substance, tobacco as the 9th, and Marijuana as the 11th most harmful. Alcohol accounts for about 50% of all hospital illnesses and tobacco accounts for 40%. Marijuana is no-where near the amount of illnesses. Alcohol and tobacco also harm the society by causing family problems and occupying police services. Marijuana has no physical side effects other than being tired and eating more when used in moderation.
Another article written by Gore Vidal in our Writer’s Reference book proves that Marijuana isn’t addictive like alcohol or tobacco. Gore Vidal’s states that every man has the right to do what he wants with his own life as long as he does not interfere with his neighbor’s pursuit of happiness, this was written in our Constitution. In the past, the Government has tried to stop illegal substances with Prohibition but it didn’t work, this is the same thing they are trying to do with Marijuana.
