Lusting for Leisure
The leisure class is defined as owner of society owning corporation and stock. Ultimately they live without having to work because their capital grows when people buy their products or stay at their hotels. In fact the middle class ultimately works to make the leisure class person richer. The leisure class gets by as their money earns interest in the bank. Surely the likes of the Hiltons, Trumps etc. and such are those who need not work because they are born having the rights and privileges of the leisure or upper class citizens that the rest of society does not have access to.
The middle class works to attain a leisure class lifestyle by working very hard to get a taste of what the leisure class can get without any exertion. They work all their lives. Perhaps the people of the leisure class live much fuller lives as they are able to fulfill other activities with their time other than working.
This quarter, we discussed the effects of modernity and the emergence of working class revolution and the precariousness of their plight. Indeed, people of the leisure class are respected because o their money, while we have the middle class and lower classes working harder and harder to simply achieve some equality with the higher echelons of society. Authors such as Meridel LeSueur illustrate the difficulties of the working class people. We also see in the women’s, communist, and racial movements, a struggle to gain equality. Writers paint a picture about the plight that society refuses t o acknowledge and change. When we read stories and articles in books and writings we better understand their situation. Perhaps they even change our actions and choices in life knowing that they have some effect. Although there is a great distinction between the middle class and lower class, we will group them together to illustrate the differences between them and the leisurely class.
