Read Case Study, "Home Style Cookies” on pp. 67-66 and answer the questions at the end of the case.
1. Briefly describe the cookie production process.
There are two ovens in the company, which are being used in the production process (or the batch processing system). “It begins as soon as management gets orders from distributors.” (Stevenson, 2011).
Before the start of each shift, there is the list of cookies to be manufactured in accordance with the application filed by the distributor. The person, who is responsible for the process, enters the necessary data into the computer.
There is the automated way to determine the number of the component, needed to make cookies for each batch and sent to the warehouse store ingredients.
All components baking in accordance with the automated process are mixed in a special mixing apparatus.
After the ingredients have been blended, the batter was poured into the apparatus for slicing cookie and further the process of baking, cooling the finished product ready for packaging and sales.
2. What are two ways that the company has increased productivity?
The Company adopted two decisions, which have improved its own performance. The first method - a change in the method of cutting since sliced diagonally baking requires less space for the finished product than the cookie, which are cut a circle.
The second way to increase productivity in the company was the decision to increase the length of the oven for baking cookies, which enables to produce more than the finished product per unit of time.
