In this short story there are two main characters, the girl from Onitcha and the man from Lagos, he during the story falls attracted to her, but he is attracted to her in a way that hurts because she is engaged and maybe pregnant. She seems to be a promiscuous girl cause of the way she dresses, with tight clothes “Mad people clothes”, this cloth she makes her selves. She is a very proud women, proud because of her look and the “Conquests” she makes over men, in other words she is vein.
The action of the story is that, she is engaged, almost going to marry someone, when this man from Lagos comes and gets attracted by her and said they where going to meet at night time, but as the town is a gossip town when she gets to her home and her mother already knows she was going to meet this man and tells her she is doing bad because she is already engaged, and is waiting a baby.
The story’s style is in a narrative yet indirect form. Written in the third person, its words reflect the feelings of Lilian’s, the stranger’s and the fiancé’s feelings alike. An indirect part of the story, which is also greatly emphasized, is the last line: “She was thinking of the stranger from Lagos and wishing she had been braver”. The last line might have meant that Lilian already knew the stranger from when she was in Lagos. Her sudden desire to see him at night, and the fact that the man had come to see her probably meant that they had already met in the past.
The story’s opening scene begins with the captivating meeting of Lilian and the newly-arrived stranger in the compound. This part involves a very intense mood, which reflects on the feelings of Lilian and the Stranger. Mesmerized by Lilian’s dancing, the stranger later tries to pursue her in the streets of Onitsha. He does not take into account that Onitsha is not a place where talking in the streets is considered respectable, especially while Lilian is engaged to another man.
