Medical marijuana is a significant attribute to the field of medicine and a cure for many things. Imagine having 20 to 60 seizures a day despite trying every prescription medication and modified diet out there. This was the life of six-year-old Charlotte Figi until her parents began treatment with medicinal marijuana. Charlotte’s Webb is the name given to this drug. She began having only 1-2 petite mal seizures a week. Medical marijuana suppresses overactivity of the nervous system. My purpose is to inform you that medical marijuana, also known as medical cannabis, is a significant attribute to the field of medicine. Medicinal marijuana carries fewer adverse effects than prescription drugs and how it can treat a wide variety of diseases. Prescription drugs give far more detrimental effects than medicinal marijuana does. The majority of prescription medications are narcotics while medical marijuana is a non-narcotic homeopathic remedy. Because of the controversy behind medical marijuana, prescription medication is commonly prescribed over medical marijuana. This is not always the best decision, and statistics can prove this notion. “In 2010, pharmaceutical drug overdoses were established as one of the leading causes of death in the United States… Total drug overdoses killed more Americans than firearms or motor vehicle accidents in 2010.” (CLAAD, 2014) This number only continues to rise; there is reported zero death caused by the use of medical marijuana.
