Reminiscing my childhood days spent in my hometown reminds me the happiness, excitement and simpleness of life I had. Together with my friends, we wander around the mountains near our homes and look for guava trees with ripe fruits. When our bags are full, we climb our favourite tree and at the top branch, we eat the ripe guavas while sharing stories and laughter. We also love to go swimming in the river and there are also swimming pools wherein the water supply comes from the hot spring. When we were brave enough, we also explore the nearby cave where there are shiny crystals on its walls, stalactites and stalagmites.
Talking about food, I will always crave for our home town delicacies. When friends from other places come and visit our place, I always tell them that to fully enjoy their vacation they have to try our exotic foods. To name a few, these includes pinikpikan and etag. Pinikpikan is a dish which is prepared by beating a live chicken with a stick prior to cooking. The beating bruises the chicken's flesh, bringing blood to its surface, which is said to improve the flavour after cooking. Meanwhile, etag is our version of smoked meat or ham. This is simply salted pork that is often cooked with pinikpikan and vegetables like legumes.
Writing about my home town makes me happy. It reminds me that I always have a home.
