Atlanta Compromise Address
In this passage Washington addresses the white business men of the south to partner up with the black community before teaming of with other countries. He uses a series of compliments and stories to appeal to the audience. Throughout the paper he also had a respective tone that he made clear by emphasizing his appreciation to the white business men. This was appropriate due to the fact that he is seeking partnership.
Washington made a valid point when he implied that the black community made huge contributions to doing most of the labor in the workforce even if they were working under the whites that they were still working together. This is a perfect parallel to when he personified the fingers and hands. “In all things that are purely social we can be separate as fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.” By using this personification makes the argument more powerful and credits his ethos by being humble.
In addition, Washington continues to strengthen his ethos by finding a positive light during the slave era. Although his people where working under whites he gave appraisal to them for recognizing them through every stage of its progress. This most likely would make the audience feel appreciated and influence them towards partnership
Furthermore, Washington made clear that they are in need of help by metaphorically speaking about how the black community is dying of thirst and seeks water from the white business men. He tries to make a pathos appeal that the black community has “nursed your children, watching by the sick beds of your mothers and fathers” to get the help in return. The pathos appeal reflects on the loyalty the black community had held up for the whites. This shows the level of trust and in every partnership trust is one of the key elements.
