Local Man Catches on Fire During Demolition Derby

6 February 2008 *Local Man Catches on Fire during Demolition* Derby It was the beginning of August, which for Boone County residents meant the Fair was upon them. Everyone loved fair week and all of its festivities. But on one particular warm August day during the Fair in 1981, as a daughter excitedly waited for the start of the Demolition Derby that her father was in, she had no idea of the tragedy about to be put on her family. The summer seemed to drag on, if only for the simple fact that we were waiting for one of the major highlights of our summer…… the Boone County Fair. It was a place for all of us to hang out, see old friends from school as well as the people with in our community. August finally arrives and my family heads out to the fair every day, but there was one particular day at the fair that we were anticipating more than the others, the day of the Demolition Derby. This day started out like any other normal day for myfamily. My dad, Jim Schult had been anticipating this day all summer, as he has been getting his demo car ready for this particular day all summer. The morning of the Demolition Derby he gets his car loaded onto a trailer and heads out to the Fair Grounds, where he doessome fine tuning on his car. Making sure everything is working properly and ready to go come the start of the Demolition Derby. It’s that time, the start of the demolition derby. The announcer starts announcing each car and its driver as they enter onto the field. The grandstand fills with cheers as each car is announced. I am sitting towards the top of the grandstand with my best friend, my mom and brother. We are all anxiously waiting for them to announce my dad. As they finally announce my dad, we all stand and yell. This is not the first time that my dad has been in the demolition derby. It is probably the fourth or fifth year he has been in it.
