Everyone who has ever lived in this world all has wanted the same thing, to live a life of luxury being care-free, But what exactly is luxury? Luxury is defined by various dictionaries as: the state of great comfort and extravagant living (New Oxford American Dictionary); an inessential yet desirable item that is expensive or difficult to obtain (New Oxford American Dictionary); something that is considered an indulgence rather than a necessity (dictionary.reference.com; and a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense, and/or being in the state of sumptuous living or surroundings. In shorter words, luxury is having what you want more than what you need because of your wealth. With the birth of a modern world, these definitions may not apply to the true meaning of it anymore. Luxury is defined based on the user’s standards and place or situation it is in rather than a definite standard given by society.
When we see a person dressed in a designer suit, walking down the road while carrying designer shopping bags with brand names on them, we are quick to judge that the person is of higher social status. If we based today's current thoughts of luxury on this, then this person is living a life of absolute extravagance. Society sees luxury as having the most expensive things or the most exclusive if things. When one can obtain items that most modern civilians lust over, the person is then seen as the image of luxurious people. Society points out that there are only a few people who are considered luxurious; these people are those categorized as people from the upper class. The more brands with famous name you have the more you climb to the top of the social pyramid. This kind of stereotyping did not just start occurring during the modern times.
