Catullus Love Affair

In the northern Italian city of Verona, Gaius Valeria Catullus was born, and he wrote many poems there. He wrote about 116 poems throughout his lifespan. In Catullus poems, he deeply illustrates his love that he has for Lesbia. The poem that interests me most is poem number five. It is a poem that is very emotional and the world relate to as well.

In poem number 5, Catullus tells of his unconditional love that he has for Lesbia.. He feels that love he has found is everlasting. The one thing that promotes his love for Lesbia is her kisses. In the poem it states, “Give me thousand kisses, then a hundred, another thousand next, another hundred, a thousand without pause & then a hundred, until when we have run up our thousands… (1047).” As it states, they kiss numerous of times show their love for each other. In the world today, new lovers start off by showing their love by kissing. Kissing is a symbol of love. Many times we use kissing to show affectionate love to our parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters.

Another poem that I like is poem number seventy-five. In this poem, Lesbia has committed some sins but even though she has done it Catullus still has love for her. It states, “To such a state have I been brought by your mischief, my Lesbia, and so completely ruined by my devotion, and that I couldn’t think kindly of you did the best only, nor cease to love, even if you should do –everything (1049).” Many times we faced with similar situations. For example, a friend of mine caught her boyfriend cheating on her. She did nothing about the situation but take him back. The reason why she did what she did was because of the love she has for him. Love and trust is the key to relationships. Sometimes we get caught up in love and get done our feelings hurt. Catullus knows what Lesbia has done but his love will never change. In conclusion, Catullus has illustrated his for love for Lesbia throughout his poems. Many of his poem people can...
