Management Planning Paper Terrance Kayton MGT. 330 Bruce Mischler January 24, 2009 Halliburton has risen to the oil giants they are not by luck but by careful strategic planning. They hired proven top-level managers that were able to effectively implement successful plans that met corporate objectives. Planning is the branch from which all other functions stem; in dealing with the future impact of the decisions that are made today. Management is evaluated on their supervisory ability to use the four functions of management to achieve the organizational objectives. The past several years Halliburton has been on the news front pages duea number of lawsuits plagued by questionable actions in the Middle East operations. Legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility have all played a big role in this organizations management planning. Moving to Dubai, lower taxes, all while still having government contracts that they are obligated to fulfill. Meanwhile, not being subject to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and worker unions is a well thought out and carefully planned move by top-level managers. Yet, another questionable chain of events occurred while reading about Dick Cheney, former US Vice President and his involvement with Halliburton’s investment opportunities prior to gaining employment as the 2ndmost powerful position in the free world. Once completing his tour as secretary of defense under George Bush Sr., Mr. Cheney teamed up with Halliburton. There he spent five years and became vice president to George Bush Jr., and it has been said that since Mr. Cheney has left office he will soon be able to cash in on his Halliburton holdings. Considering the company’s stock price jumped from $10 a share prior to the war in Iraq to $41 in just three short years later, this will be a hefty and lucrative sum of money.
