In this paper, I will discuss how encouraging diversity can help a business grow and thrive. Although we probably do not understand the importance of diversity in the workplace, many employees might not know how and why it affects them. Once employees learn how they can benefit from your diversity, they are more compliant to embrace the concept and comply with company directives and diversity in the workplace.
Understanding Cultural Intelligence
What is Cultural Intelligence
Cultural intelligence is operationalized as a specific form of intelligence focused on an individual’s ability to grasp and reason correctly in situations of cultural diversity (Ang & VanDyne, 2008; Earley& Ang, 2003)
My Cultural Intelligence
Awareness: I sometimes aware of the physical space between myself and someone from another culture. I am also aware of the tone of my voice when communicating with someone from a different culture. I often participate on multicultural teams, and that my experiences may be different from the experiences of my teammates.
Understanding: Most of the time I understand the difference between prejudice and discrimination. I sometimes understand the why it may be necessary for me to change my nonverbal behaviors in a non-cultural setting. Sometimes I understand vary my verbal and non-verbal language when necessary.
Behavioral Skills: I often observe people showing cultural insensitivity or bias. I sometimes seek feedback from others regarding my biases. Most of the time I ask questions to make
sure I have heard and understood all of the details given by someone with a culturally diverse background.
