I think that the use of marijuana should be considered a threat not only to our families but to our society both morally and physically. There is a growing misconception that some illegal drugs, such as marijuana, can be used safely along with the false impression that the drug is harmless. Some advocates for the legalization of this drug in the United States single out marijuana as a different kind of drug, that it doesn’t pose the same negative effects on its users as cocaine, heroin or meth. They say that marijuana use is less dangerous thus should be legal to use.
There always has been and will continue to be real health risks and dependencies for people involved in the use of illicit drugs. Smoking marijuana can cause both short term and long term effects in the people that partake in using it. The short term effects of using marijuana are quite harmful. They can include such things as memory loss, influence in perception, trouble with cognitive skills such as thinking and problem solving, a loss of motor skills, and an increase in the user’s heart rate and anxiety levels. Marijuana has an impact on the mental development of young people along with their ability to concentrate in school and in every other aspect of their lives. It also impacts their drive, motivation and initiative to reach goals set by them or others. Marijuana risks not only involve young people, but they affect people of all ages. As far as long term effects, there is the possibility of developing lung cancer due to the cancer causing chemicals being greater than those found in cigarettes and there is a possibility of developing many different types of heart disease associated with smoking.
