Marijuana v. Alcohol
In America there are legal drugs, illegal drugs, drugs that should be legal, and drugs that should be illegal. One of the most common debates is about alcohol and marijuana. Both drugs, both have been illegal at one point in time. Marijuana just so happen to stay illegal.
Marijuana is a very popular drug. It is the third most used recreational drug in America, right behind alcohol, and tobacco. It is the number one abused illegal drug in America, but many feel as though it shouldn’t be illegal. Some of the reasons for wanting to be legal is to save money, help people, help the economy, and most importantly save lives. This drug has many myths associated to it. Some of these myths that aren’t true are that it causes brain damage, damages reproductive system, marijuana is a “gateway” drug, damages immune system, as dangerous as tobacco, and causes short term memory. One of the most popular myth is about being a gateway drug. This is a myth to back this up in the Netherlands they legalized marijuana, and usage and arrest from cocaine, and heroin decreased. The legalization of this drug would help the economy in many ways. America would be able to grow and produce hemp products that are more cost effective to make than cotton product, we as Americans wouldn’t be spending 10 billion dollars of our tax money to arrest and enforce the prohibition of marijuana. In 2008 there was 847,000 people arrested for marijuana usage and possession. That is more than murder, rape, robbery, and domestic abuse all together. Americans should want to this to be legal for all of the benefits, and if they are against it don’t smoke it.
Alcohol is one drug that is legal, abused, and deadly. This drug is the number one abused drug in America and responsible for the death of more than 100,000 people each year.
