ESSAY Topic: Marriage Customs It is very clear that marriage customs are different in different religions. The Muslim, Christian, Hindu and Zulu cultures are all very different in all types of ways. Different cultures and different religions all depict different events and circumstances which occur in a marriage. All types of different weddings take place almost every day of the year. A young Hindu woman could be getting married to a young Hindu man, in a temple, at this very moment. An African girl could be waiting indoors until her wedding day comes. Although all religions are different in some way or another they each have amazing qualities about them that make them so individually unique. According to all traditions excessive amounts of effort are put into wedding preparations. In Muslim cultures both families have to agree on the wedding, if one side of the family is not in agreement the wedding won’t take place. Normally there is a 'Mendhi’ which is for girls only where the girl has a celebration for the wedding. This is similar in the Christian culture where a kitchen tea takes place. Games and music are normally played and sometimes there are even performers. This part of the preparation usually takes place in a hall depending on the number of people. Mendhi may also be applied to the hands of the bride-to-be. For a Christian wedding there are many more preparations involved. Such as the setting of the venue, time, date, arrangement of the priest as well as the organization of invitations and the clothing to be worn. Some of these arrangements are also common in other cultures. All these weddings occur in different venues that are specific to each culture. A Christian wedding will take place at a church whilst an African traditional wedding first takes place at the bride’s house and then later at the grooms house.
