Session I

My first face to face encounter with “Mr. and Mrs. X” occurred on May 27, 2009 at 8:30 in the evening. This session took place at the home of the couple due to the couple having a small child that they did not want to take outside of the house. In gathering the personal information of the couple, the couple informed me that they got married really young and extremely fast. It seems that they met in June of 2002, married by June 2003, and pregnant with their first child by August of 2003. I asked the couple how they “got” to the place where they were in their marriage. “Mrs. X” spoke up stating that she felt as though “Mr. X” has no sense of responsibility and pays no attention to her. After listening to her for a few minutes speak so negatively about her husband I asked her to attempt to speak more positively due to seeing the expression of her husbands face. “Mr. X” stated that his wife did not want to consider any other way except hers and her mother. His wife on the other hand, seem to undermine the relationship not really having anything positive to say. When questioned why the wife was so negative, she responded by saying that if she never got her hopes up he could never disappoint her due to always expecting it. “Mr. X” then mumbled “why are you still with me?” After exploring those feelings, I assigned the couple some homework. The homework assignment had two parts, (1) I instructed them to write the information in the journal provided, list things that they could change about themselves (behaviors) that would get them closer to “where they should be” and not to discuss the journal writing with the other...
