Mars Incorporated: A Pretty Sweet Place to Work

1.) The two Principles of Mars that I believe would influence the way employees do their work is responsibility and efficiency. As a corporation, Mars encourages all of their employees to be active in their environment and community. Mars has programs that allow employees to spend one to six weeks volunteering for partner organizations. In these programs employees get to work together and grow their knowledge on that organization. For example, a group of employees went to a small school in Mtskheta, Georgia where they made an influence on the children’s lives. The second principle is efficiency, because Mars is doing everything they can to be a more efficient company. By 2040, the company has a plan to stop using fossil fuels, lessen their impact on the water quality and availability, and to stop putting their waste into landfills. Mars try’s to reuse and recycle as much as possible too. For example, any leftover gum is mixed with other leftover materials and is turned into fuel.
2.) Mars Incorporated has a high culture in people orientation, because they take care of their employees. A great example of this is their employee Jim Price. Jim was working as a janitor at Mars, and the company paid for his college tuition and books do he could further his education. Team members enjoy working there, the turnover rate is only 5%. Some employees even travel 114 miles to get to work. These values came from when Frank and Forrest Sr. owned the company. Forrest Sr. was harsh on the employees, but it was because he was passionate about his company. He installed time clocks, got rid of offices, and at the same time raised salaries. Forrest Sr. was committed to Mars, and employees appreciated that. Mars employees didn’t love their boss, but they respected him greatly. Company culture is high in paying attention to detail too. All of Mars’ products must meet certain standards, for example their candy M&Ms. 2% of M&Ms...
