“Reformation was the shattering of western Christianity into several new Christian religions” (notes). Martin Luther succeeded in starting the Reformation and not John Hus, and John Wycliff because they were uneducated, didn’t have the printing press, and didn’t have any followers.
Hus and Wycliff did not start the Reformation because they were uneducated. Luther’s father had wanted him to be a lawyer and he had gone to law school but did not like a career in law. Luther had later been caught in a thunderstorm and asked for the lord to save him and he would become a monk in return. Luther was saved and he kept his word and become a monk. He read and studied the Bible and he thought salvation was reached by having faith in your god.
Luther had the printing press, which helped spread ideas quicker. “In 1455, movable type was discovered, which led to the first printing press. The Bible was the first book printed by Johann Gutenburg. This led to an increase of Bibles which were given to the common folk which led to an increase in education and people were able to form their own ideas about religion”(notes). The 95 Theses were also printed which spread Luther’s idea very quickly.
John Hus and John Wycliff didn’t have many followers and the ones they had were crushed later on. Luther had many followers, mostly Germans, after his 95 Theses were printed. But when Luther went against the Church in court at Diet of Worms, he began to gain much more support.
Hus and Wycliff led the path to Reformation but couldn’t make it. Luther had began reforming the Church and had many followers. Much of Luther’s ideas spread and his followers became known as Lutherans. He also gained support from princes and they later became known as Protestants.
