Material Deprivation Affecting Educational Achievement

c) Outline some of the ways in which material deprivation may affect educational achievement (12 marks)
Material Deprivation can affect education achievement in many different ways. Some factors that can affect educational achievement are the home, this may be because they are living in temporary accommodation and may have to move again so they don’t have time to concentrate on any work that they are given from school. Also living in temporary accommodation could mean that they haven’t settled into school properly as they don’t know whether or not they will be staying in that school or have to move to another school when they get more permanent accommodation. Living in temporary accommodation could be because their parents don’t have a sufficient enough income to provide adequate housing for their children which may mean that the house they were living in became unliveable, this could also lead to problems such as illness and time off of school because of the condition of the home. Also if they are living with other people the home may be overcrowded which means that there isn’t anywhere to study and they may have to share bedrooms, which can lead to no sleep or very little sleep.
Another factor that may affect educational achievement is that many parents may not be able to afford to buy the uniforms as they are so expensive, this may mean that the parents have to get 2nd hand uniforms which leads to bullying within school making some children feel like they don’t belong and making them not want to go to school because they are being bullied for wearing clothes that are 2nd hand. This means that middle class children have the advantage over working class children as their parents will not only be able to afford the uniforms but also all the books, meals and trips that their child will be needing throughout the school year.
