Maternal Leave Policy

Maternal leave policy is a great deal for working mothers all over the world because it does not only grants employment protection to women around childbirth but it points out the significance of caring the newborn infant properly and it’s also a sign of respect towards women that really needed this kind of attention. Brunei Darussalam was recently touched by these amendments of the maternal policy by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his welcoming the new year 2011 titah shown in appendix 1. Where His Majesty also announced a new decree on maternity leave policy, for employees in the civil service and women officers. The maternity leave is extended from 56 days to 105 days which are an overall of three months, this new regulation is called the Maternity Leave Order 2011.

This regulation is to be practice from 1st January 2011, His Majesty’s are concerned towards providing the needs and essentials health of the mothers before and after the birth of their child. This needs and essentials mostly concerns the nurturing of the babies that affects the health of the mothers. The fully revise of what do mothers need to do for their babies is no other than ‘breastfeeding’, which is hard to do for a mother if she’s working. Ignorant people mainly male employers would address to this problem by telling the mother to buy baby’s formula or cow’s milk because they see this maternity leave as a setback. Without the knowledge that breast milk is the most ideal for the baby and those artificial milk should only be an option if the breast feeding is impossible, for example if the mother is HIV positive, or if she’s on her medicine consuming the cytotoxic drug, or if that baby is adopted. Baby’s genetic conditions that are excluded from breast feeding are those with galactosaemia, alactosia and phenylketonuria.
