In the upcoming presidential election, the two main candidates are Barrack Obama and John McCain. They both have very different opinions of how to create peace in Iraq and the surrounding countries in the Middle East. Obama has promised to end the war and pull out the troops beginning immediately after his possible election. McCain has decided not to promise for immediate peace, but instead will continue in the war until the Iraq government can hold itself up. He hopes peace will come eventually. Both Obama and McCain have extremist points of view on the war and how to resolve the conflict in Iraq. The American people need to take the good ideas about peace from both of the candidates and combine them to form the best possible way to create peace in the Middle East.
Obama is fully committed to ending the war in Iraq. Immediately after he is elected he will start a slow withdrawal of troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two brigades every month from Iraq. All of the troops will be removed within sixteen months. He believes that it would be important to leave a small force of military personnel in Iraq to protect the American diplomatic and civilian personnel. He has promised to launch a diplomatic effort to secure the Iraq border, to keep meddling countries out of the affairs of Iraq, to support the reconciliation of Iraq’s sectarian groups, to isolate Al Queda, and to provide financial support for the reconstruction and development of Iraq. Obama has also promised to provide at least $2 billion to expand services to Iraqi refugees living in other countries and ensure that they find safety in their own country. (1)
Although all of these promises would be wonderful to accomplish, Obama is being too idealistic. All of these issues could be carried out if they occurred in a perfect world.
