Measure for Measure vs. On Christian Liberty
One of William Shakespeare’s great works which deals with a number of socially charged issues is referred as the Measure for Measure. This play is also closely related to the works of one Martin Luther. Martin Luther's play is called On Christian Liberty. These two plays have scenes that portray certain themes. Some of these themes include not only morality and religion but also sexuality. The play Measure for Measure puts a great emphasis on issues revolving around both marriage and religious identity. Furthermore, the main characters are portrayed having issues not only morally but also religious. This theme brings about the similarity between Measure for measure and On Christian Liberty. In addition, the play by Shakespeare has situations which may be seen by the audience as morally troubling. It is important for the audience to understand that these situations were considered normal during the era he lived. Therefore, this paper is going to relate Measure for Measure and On Christian Liberty precisely on the theme of Morality. In addition, a brief analysis is going to be provided.
The first and the most important scene concerning morality revolve around the bed trick. This scene provides a great quantity of details in regards to morality. The scene depicts some of the characters being forced to make choices which make them question their morality. One instance involves Isabella, who is portrayed not only as a virtuous but also a pious novice character. Isabella is seen to reject sexual advances from a corrupt magistrate. Furthermore, another scene shows Angelo attempting to seek sexual favor from Isabella with the reason of helping Claudio, her brother, from being executed.
