Weighing the cost and benefits of a situation. Medea decided that murdering her children was a cost that she was willing to pay in order to cause suffering of Jason. Her judgment was clouded and her passion for Jason to suffer changed her main Prerogative. Medea used her god given gift to bear children against her ex-husband; revenge was the tool that caused her to weaponize her children.
“ The horror of what I am going to do; but anger, The spring of all life’s horrors, masters my resolve” Medea can see what she about to do as a horror but as anger is the deciding factor. When she realizes the anger she holds for Jason murdering their children seems to be the only rational way to resolve that anger. Revenge is the goal in her mind and she appears to be willing to pay any price achieve it.
Others around her are asking if she has lost it “ She’s dead- the princess, and her father Creon too, They’re both dead, by your poisons” “Your new is excellent” When Jason’s messenger tells Medea of the deaths she has caused she shows no remorse and is taking pleasure in the fact that she is the reasons behind these deaths. If it causes pain and suffering for Jason Medea sees it as the right thing to do, but others around are wondering what’s wrong with her. “ What? Are you sane, or raving mad? When you’ve committed this hideous crime against the royal house, your glad” any moral ground that she stood upon before had dissolved at her feet and others can see that but she is blind to it.
“ I now will punish, He shall never alive again the sons he had from me. From his new bride he will never breed a son; she by my poison, wretched girl, Must die a hideous death” Not only is Medea fine with killing her own children she is willing to kill any opportunity of new life if it stems from her ex-husband. She has made all her enemy all for her own satisfaction. No faults can be seen from her perspective anything and everything must be done to see Jason suffer.
