Management and Leadership
Management and leadership may go hand-in-hand; however, are two distinct concepts. Management and leadership are often misconstrued as being one in the same. However, some who is a leader may not possess good manager skills and vice versa someone who is a manager may not possess good leadership skills. John Kotter, a Harvard Business School Professor, mentions, management and leadership have two distinctive, fundamental purposes: management is about coping with complexity; and leadership is about coping with change (Bencivenga, 2002). An organization’s culture is potent in that it can hinder or enable success in which leaders can influence the alignment of the culture with the organization’s mission and strategies. This paper examines the differences between management and leadership as well as how the two relate within the Tyco organization. The paper will also examine the roles and responsibilities managers and leaders, including Tyco’s leaders and management, play in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture. The paper will evaluate the influence globalization has had on how management and leaders handle globalization as well as how globalization has influenced Tyco’s corporate citizenship. Additionally, the paper aims to describe several strategies managers and leaders can implement to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture.
