Without Failure, Success Would Not Exist
Over the years we have studied several philosophers. The ones that are most common are Aristotle, Plato, Hobbes, and so forth. However, many of them I could understand and agree with to a certain degree; Pojman I could not agree with at all. For Pojman to argue for a world where we are punished for our ancestors or current relative’s failures and crimes. Can you imagine a world like that? I can and all I see is horror and a world where reform and evolution does not exist. The people we call friends and co-workers would not exist; perhaps I would not exist. I can tell you a great many things why I would not exist today or have the things I do.
Let start with slavery; if I had to be punished for the crimes of my ancestors then I would be dead for a great many reasons. My Grandfather is a product of slavery rape. My great Grandmother was raped by her Master. Therefore, my Grandfather would have died and so would have my mother for the sin of my great great grandfather. Being that many of the African American’s cannot trace their ancestors back to a specific master, that there is also a great chance my ancestor’s may have run away. At that time it was against the law, which again would have cost my family their life according to Pojman’s world.
Pojman also argued that we should be punished for our family’s failures as well. If it was not for other peoples failures we would not have some of the things we have today. Can you imagine being killed for not executing a recipe!? We would not have all the great things that Benjamin Franklin invented. I remember reading a quote from him that inspired me to keep working hard towards my goal to finish school, he said “I didn’t fail the test; I...
