My group’s environmental issues were environmental & development, population growth, food and agriculture and biological diversity. Since there were 6 of us in a groups, we decided to split the topics among each other and at the end put together all of our research. The issue I got assigned was developmental and environmental issues on a global scale with Rebecca. From there, we decided to split it among ourselves, leaving me to research environmental issues and Rebecca researching development issues. Some environmental issues I researched were water and climate change. On the websites I used as my sources, I came across some interesting facts. For example, according to Anup Shah’s “Water and Development article”, it takes 150 gallons of water to make 1 newspaper, 1,000 gallons to make 1 liter of orange juice, 2,500 gallons to make 1 pound of beef, and it takes 40,000 gallons to make 1 new car. This shows it takes a great amount of water to produce our goods. Also in the article “Global Water Facts”, I learned that out of the all the water in Earth, 97% is salt water, 2% is in polar ice caps, and 1% is fresh water, which includes rivers, lakes, streams and aquifers not to mention that over half of this percentage is polluted. Out of this 1%, 70% is used for agriculture, 20% is used for industry, and 10% is used for all other human uses, this showing that we are using freshwater at twice the rate it is being replenished by nature. Another interesting fact I came across was that Americans use over 100 gallons per person per day, Which I learned is significantly more than anyone else in the world. As a matter of fact, one flush of our toilet, which requires 3-7 gallons of water, uses more water then the average person in a developing country such as Africa has access to all day.
