FedEx and UPS: Mission and Vision Paper

MISSION STATEMENT
FedEx Corporation and United Parcel Service are the world’s two largest integrators, meaning they perform integrated air and ground transportation services (Bowen Jr., 2012). A quick glance at both companies mission statements show that they are also very similar. A mission statement communicates the organization’s reason for being, and how it aims to serve its key stakeholders (Developing Mission, Vision, and Values). They also define the nature, purpose, and role of organizations; focus resources and guide planning (Keeling, 2013). Mission statements also go hand in hand with an organization’s values. Values are the beliefs of an individual or group in which they are emotionally invested. (Developing Mission, Vision, and Values).
FedEx and UPS mission statement and values are similar in what they both want to achieve. Mission statements play three critical roles: (1) communicate the purpose of the organization of the stakeholders, (2) inform the strategy and development, and (3) develop the measurable goals and objectives by which to gauge the success of the organization’s strategy (Developing Mission, Vision, and Values). FedEx’s mission statement is a quality example of communicating all three roles. It focuses on providing financial results for its shareholders, providing the highest quality customer service, and developing rewarding relationships with its employees, partners and suppliers. I would recommend that corporate social responsibility be included in their mission statement and the methods to achieve it. UPS mission statement has the same values as FedEx but is more clearly defined. The values are clearly explained point-by-point and has a clear strategy on how to achieve each value. The mission statement also is focused on the future growth of the organization.
