1,000,000,000 billion dollars. The amount of money the highest grossing movie made in just seventeen days setting records and shattering expectations. When it comes to entertainment everyone thinks of Hollywood and movies. It’s common to expect a movie to make millions of dollars but a video game? Not exactly people’s first guess if asked what form of entertainment would make the most profit. Call of Duty is one of video games most successful franchises especially Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare series with sales setting records after each new game is released. Not only did Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) shatter video game records it set entertainment sales records overall. That’s on top of movies and television. Along with setting sales records the game changed the call of duty franchise by adding the latest graphics and incorporating the ELITE website into the game as well. That is why I think MW3 is the most successful game when compared to its prequels MW2 and MW.
It took James Cameron just seventeen days to make a billion dollars at the box office with his 3D blue-skinned aliens in the film Avatar but was then trumped by a different kind of virtual character. The latest installment of the video game series COD: Modern Warfare has become the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time, hitting one billion in sales through retailers in just 16 days, beating the latest Harry Potter film, which took 17 days to hit the billion dollar mark in August of 2011. The game left Cameron's other commercial triumph Titanic, which took three months to pass the billion dollar mark, in the dust. Activision, the producer of the games, said that the latest in its mega-selling franchise, COD:MW3 had notched up four hundred million in sales within 24 hours of launching on November 8, 2011, Activision.com.
