A motive is an impulse that causes a person to act. Motivation is an internal process that makes a person move toward a goal. Motivation, like intelligence, can’t be directly observed. Instead, motivation can only be inferred by noting a person’s behavior. A motivation may be intrinsic, extrinsic, or both. Intrinsic motivation is the motivation to act for the sake of the activity alone. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is the motivation to act for external rewards. Why are some students successful at language learning while others are not? Motivation is needed very much in language learning. Motivation is a power which gives desire to the students so they have awareness that language learning is their responsible. Motivation will be an important thing makes students fall or success in their learning.
I have been an English teacher in such country as China and faced with situation when lots of students motivated to learn English because of exams or entering to college, others was motivating by spirit of English and atmosphere in the class, some of them just like foreign teacher (as a foreigner) and tried to learn a lot to surprise a teacher. I met situations when toddlers, whose didn’t have any internal motivation, set at attention and started answering or exercising when you give them a candy after the right answer in English. Nothing else could bring them learn and speak English such selflessly as a candy.
Motivation has a huge impact of learning because include almost all of sphere of life. Most researchers and methodologists have come to the view that intrinsic motivation produces better results than its extrinsic counterpart. Even where the original reason for taking up a language course, for example, is extrinsic, the chances of success will be greatly enhanced if the students come to love the learning process.
