Movies Depicting Tobacco Use Desrves an R Rating

Jonathan Barris English 1110 Lakeland cc 2/19/09 5:45-7:00 Many movies briefly show someone smoking a cigarette or chewing tobacco, but does this mean we should restrict the audience to a certain age group? Is placing tobacco use into the same category as violence and sexual content always right or should it depend on the movie. In many instances choosing an “R” rating for a film depends on the type of movie and its content. For this reason films should be further examined before being placed in the “R” category and not just because of tobacco use. Movies depicting tobacco use should be rated”R” depending on the targeted audience. One reason that a movie should be rated “R” is that younger audiences are easily influences by movies. Many movies and TV shows have actions or sayings that will imitate or repeated again. Individuals take scenes from movies as being popular and are regularly copied. Younger audiences are more likely to imitate these scenes or acts because they can be seen as cool or popular. With that said most of all younger people strive to be popular and will imitate these actions to achieve that status. Smoking is shown in movies and TV. shows regularly and can have an adverse effect on younger audiences. Smoking in general can have several long term unhealthy effects as well. For example smoking can cause lung cancer, throat cancer, heart disease and low birth weight in babies etc. in addition to being regularly unhealthy smoking can be very costly. If a smoker smokes one pack a day, being that they cost roughly five dollars a pack, which means they spend thirty-five dollars a week and roughly one hundred and forty dollars a month on cigarettes! Smoking can also make your clothes smell and be viewed as unattractive. Giving a movie depicting tobacco use an “R” rating is sometimes necessary, but should depend on the nature of the film and its content .This could depend on the on what kind of movie it is or what the movie is about.
