The Mongol Empire lasted from about 1206-1368 A.D. It consisted of what is known today as Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, China, Iran, and a portion of Russia. Asia was made up of a bunch of small tribes who were bounded together and became a massive empire known as the Mongols. This man is known throughout history as Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan, born with the name Temujin, was the original ruler that steered the Mongols to become such a successful empire. Khan was kind-hearted to his people and to those who didn’t cross him, loyal to his friends and family, relentless to his enemies, and fair to everyone. The traits of the great Genghis Khan and other aspects helped the Mongols to build the largest contiguous empire in human history.
Genghis Khan was born with the name Temujin in A.D. 1162 to Yesugei and Hoelun. It is said that Temujin came out of his mother, Hoelun, clutching a blood clot the size of a knucklebone. In Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, a novel by Jack Weatherford, it says “From somewhere in his mother’s warm womb, this boy had grasped the blood clot and brought it with him from that world into this one.” The Mongol people interpreted this as a sign that Temujin would be destined for greatness. There are not many facts about Temujin’s earlier years as a child. One incident from his life that was documented and preserved well happened when Temujin was about nine years old. Temujin’s father, Yesugei, was said to have taken Temujin to his mother’s old tribe to find him a wife. Before they could find Hoelun’s tribe they went to visit Dai Sachen the leader of the Onggirat camp. Dai liked what he saw in Temujin. He introduced them to his daughter named Borte who was ten years old. The fathers agreed that they would marry. Yesugei left Temujin behind and on the road home was poisoned by the Tatar clan.
