“The Subconscious Mind”

I wrote this paper because eventually I’d like to work with the subconscious. It interests me because of the nightmares I keep having, I’d like to be able to eventually control them better. In my paper I’d like to try to explain what exactly is our subconscious mind and how does it work? Can we work with our subconscious in order to live better lives on a daily basis?

Think of the subconscious mind as the storage room of everything that is currently not in your conscious mind; it stores all your life experiences, your belief system, your memories, your skills, all of the situations that you’ve been through, and all of the images that you’ve ever seen. The best way to understand the subconscious mind is through the example of someone who’s just started to learn how to drive. At the beginning, he wouldn’t be able to hold a conversation with anyone while driving as he should be focusing on the different moves involved; that’s because he’s still using his conscious mind to drive. In order to describe the major psychological theories of our subconscious mind I’d like to describe it in terms of our behavior. “When it comes to our behavior from moment to moment, the big question is, ‘What to do next?’ ” “Well, I found that we have these unconscious behavioral guidance systems that are continually furnishing suggestions through the day about what to do next, and the brain is considering and often acting on those, all before conscious awareness.” ( John A.
