Essay on Tybalt

In this essay I am going to discuss the contribution of the character Tybalt to the William Shakespeare play Romeo & Juliet. The play Romeo and Juliet is one of Romeos famous if not the most famous of his tragedies. It is about two “Star crossed lovers” whose families are at war. This hatred between the Montagues and Capulets caused a terribly tragic ending where the lovers ended up dying .I am going to look at his actions and speech relationships throughout the play. Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin and Lady Capulet’s nephew.
The first time you see Tybalt is were Tybalt is with some of the other members of the Capulet family were they have a “run in” with some of the Montague family members. One of the Montague’s is Benvolio, Benvolio is a peacekeeper trying to stop the Montague and Capulet’s fighting. But he is a member of the Montague family none the less.
Tybalt’s wants to be feared by everyone and wants lots of power by killing someone important within the Montague household. “What are thou drawn among these heartless hinds? Turn thee Benvolio turn and fight me, turn upon your death”.
Benvolio is also Romeo’s best friend. But then Benvolio says I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword or manage it to part these men with me.
So almost immediately into the play you can see the difference in characters between Benvolio and Tybalt. Tybalt is a megalomaniac and driven by power. Benvolio just wants to live a peaceful life and basically just have a good time. But Tybalt finds pleasure in fighting and causing panic, chaos and striking fear into the people that he dislikes.
Tybalt hates everyone in the Montague family but in my opinion he does not know why he hates them so. But this is how he has been brought up with this “Ancient grudge”. This can be seen when he says “What drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell and, Have at thee coward!” This shows he wants to fight Montague’s and that he wants to kill Benvolio....
