Multicultural Competency Paper

During the course of this class, there was much discussion on various ways in which to assess personality by well known theorist within the field of psychology. In choosing one that will influence me the most in regard to interaction with others in the workplace, three criterion that were taken into consideration: (1) Comprehensiveness. The reason for this is because it vital that I use a theory that accounts for a wide range of “internal and external determinates of behavior” (Pervin, Cervone & John, 2005). (2) Cultural Utility. In my workplace atmosphere, there is a very high level of exposure to cultural diversity. If I work with a theory that cannot be utilized throughout different cultural, limitations would be placed on whom I am able to relate to the best of my ability. (3) Research Relevance. It is my opinion that if a theorist incorporates a measurable amount of sound research, there is greater chance of successfully assesses a person with many variables. With those things taken into mind, my belief is that Erikson’s theories of personality have the most influence on me. In this paper I will go into more detail of how these particular theories will influence my social role in the workplace environment; how I communicate with others and how it affects my assumptions of others.

Overview of Erikson’s Post Freudian Views
Although Erikson’s views within psychoanalysis were not completely incompatible with Freud, vast differences are still evident. The changes in Erikson’s theories were most likely caused by the many occurrences in his life such as his experiences in his anthropological studies of various cultural societies of the Native Americans (he observed the Sioux and the Yurok nations), his biological portraits of Martin Luther, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Maxim Gorky and Hitler and his emphasis on life cycles that expand into stages past infancy (shown in his eight stages of psychosocial development).
