My Adventures In Cake and College

The idea of going to college never seemed to be much of a reality when I graduated from high school fourteen years ago, instead I found myself in the position of starting a family. Now that I am in my mid-thirties, with three teenage children, I feel like a kid again with a new passion for things.
I have recently found a new passion in my life that apparently I am pretty talented at, which is the wonderful world of cake decorating. I have always been a very crafty person who also loves to cook and bake. A favorite thing to do as a family is to watch all of the cake shows on television, so a little over a year ago when my son turned thirteen I decided I would try my hand at making him a fancy cake like they do on television. I have never had any type of formal training, and really had no idea what I was doing, but I was going to make it work somehow. I did tons of research on the internet, as well as watching several shows to learn as much as I could before I attempted anything. Finally it was time to bake. My son is a what some people would call a legomaniac, so my husband and I decided to make his cake look like Lego blocks that spelled out the number thirteen. It actually turned out to be really cute!
Once I had that one under my belt, I did a couple more cakes for family members birthdays over the next couple of months, as well as a couple of carry-in events that we had attended. That is when everything really started to take off. I started all of this in October of 2009, and by March of this year I had several people asking me to make them cakes for different occasions and offering to pay me to do them. Every single person that has gotten a cake from me, as well as everyone in my family all keep telling me that I need to open my own cake shop.
I believe that I have the talent and the drive to run my own business, or at least begin a partnership with someone else who has the same interests. I have recently been...
