My Grandfather, My Hero

Are you fortunate enough to know someone that can make the biggest, scariest closet monsters disappear without a trace? Do you have a hero? A hero is a person that influences you to better yourself. A hero should be someone who strives to make the world a better place to live, even by changing one person, who then will change another, and so on. Perhaps this person donates to charities, or volunteers to be a motivational speaker around your community. Or maybe he or she is just an overall positive person in your family.
I believe a hero should be able to make the best out of something negative. For example, my grandfather has Parkinson’s disease, and knowing that Parkinson’s is a disease that will slowly take away his vibrant love for life, he never once let any of his grandchildren see his decline. When I would arrive at my grandparent’s house I would peek in the window of the door and I would see him sitting in his chair with a sorrowful look on his face. As soon as I opened the door, and he saw me, his aura would instantly radiate happiness. It is truly amazing to me how he, knowing that there’s no cure for his disease can still go about his life in a happy manner for his grandchildren. It takes a seriously strong person to be able to do what he does.
To explain my next topic clearly, I have to explain a little bit of my background. My parents were divorced when I was a young child. I am an only child, so I never had an older sibling to baby-sit me after school. My mother worked long hours as a nurse, and my grandparents took me under their wing and helped raise me. My grandfather used to spend time with me all the time. He always encouraged me to read as much as I could. He let me read to him for hours at a time. I remember I used to watch a scary show on Nickelodeon, called “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”. I loved that show, but was always too afraid to watch it alone and my grandfather would stop whatever he was doing to watch it with me because he...
