Myspace is a social networking website that was created in 2002 by a group of executive officers and programmers from an internet marketing company called eUniverse. They saw the potential of other social sites such as Friendster to offer users the ability to interact and network with one another in an easy to use and enjoyable manner. The site was initially intended for musicians to promote their music to other musicians, producers, and fans alike. The domain name was originally being used as a virtual web data storage site. This domain would later be changed to represent a far more profitable endeavor. There have been several other similar networking sites to emerge since the inception of MySpace, however, what has helped maintain and secure the popularity of MySpace is the ability of it’s users to customize the HTML make-up of their profile page. This has made them far more desirable than their competitors. MySpace users can customize their pages to include their current mood, music preferences, music videos, and even change the overall appearance of their profile or layout. Users can browse through others’ profiles and create a “Friends” lists with users of similar interests. A user may even post bulletins to reach entire groups of friends at a time. This “friends” concept has proven to be the heart and should of MySpace.
MySpace also offers an extensive interactive music feature. Musicians can create a profile much different than typical users. Musicians who own the rights to their music may upload their entire discography onto their profiles to be downloaded by other users in the form of MP3’s. Unsigned artist may post their music on MySpace but may also sell their music there as well. This program has proven to be hugely successful for many artists both signed and unsigned whom have access to millions of users at any given time.
