A Nation of Wimps
What has our nation become? A “Nation of Wimps” is what most would say. Freedom is no longer a possibility for kids today. Instead, a step-by-step manual is handed to them. Young minds are no longer being used and developed, and therefore our nation has become a one of overprotective and over involved parents. And by preventing exposure to danger or challenge and then demanding more and more out of kids, parents are raising children who are anxious, depressed and unable to deal with life.
If children never fail and have their parents hand everything to them, then they will never learn and they won’t have the skills necessary to deal with their problems. “We learn through experience and we learn through bad experiences. Through failure we learn how to cope (Marano 1).” I was never brought up with everything given to me, I had to work for what I wanted and if I failed at something, then I dealt with it by myself. It has made me a stronger person by failing at something and learning from my mistake and knowing what I need to succeed next time. Today, parents are so afraid of failure that they will do anything to prevent their kids from any such possibility.
“Kids need to feel badly sometimes (Marano 1).” Through error and experimentation is where true success comes from and if kids never know what it is like to get in trouble or do something wrong then they will always be psychologically fragile and pushed towards failure. When I was growing up my parents weren’t afraid to get mad at me when I did something wrong or put me in time out, and even though I didn’t like it then I now know that I learned from my mistakes and will be more prepared for my future. When I baby-sit, parents usually seem very protective of leaving their kids at first and are scared everything won’t be perfect for them.
