Necessary Limits

In high school, sex has become a very important and favorite topic that students usually talk about a lot. There is no doubt that students will be interested in sex when they find out there are something different between men’s and women’s bodies. Sex education becomes a necessary component of the high school education. A short story called “The Pumphouse”, written by Nona Caspers, tells a story about a virgin, whose name is Peggy Schults, wants to have sex with a boy in her high school just because she believes her virginity is a big joke around the whole school. The narrator, Peggy, is facing the peer pressure coming from other girls who are no longer virgins. These girls laugh at Peggy since she does not know any thing about sex. This story is now being considered for publication in a high school newspaper called Free Press. However, because of some dark and negative images which will harm the high school students in the story, “The Pumphouse” should be published in the newspaper only with certain conditions, and guidelines.
The story conveys information to students about the peer pressure and gives them too many dark and negative images. Having sex looks like the only way for Peggy to shake off the pressure on her which makes her feel scared and tired. Peggy is thought as a stupid girl and does not know anything the whole world knowing. The reason why Peggy wants to have sex is that she can not endure the girls’ sneer and hope to shut those girls up. This sense can also happen in high school. Students perhaps think that a delusion that sex experience is a way to determine if a boy or a girl is stupid or knowledgeable.
