New Customs Is it easy for you to change your lifestyle, your viewpoint or your mind? Your answer is obviously “No, it’s not that easy!” It’s the same with me or anyone else that have to change ourselves to fit with new customs when coming to a foreign country. However, it’s not too difficult to be accustomed with the new customs, especially when we follow a particular process such as the process that I had used when coming to USA. The first step which I have done is trying to be familiar with the new language. Many misunderstandings of customs can happen if you don’t understand the language clearly. I’ve heard a really funny story about misconception of custom from my ESL 65 professor. The story is about an international student came to the US from a remote region of China. One day, he went to a supermarket with his grandma for the first time. Therefore, he kept looking at everything when his grandmother went shopping. Suddenly, he saw the shelf “Hot Dog”, which was a kind of baked dog in his hometown, so he came toward the shelf and looked for the baked dog. Obviously, he couldn’t find it, and when his grandma showed him the real “Hot Dog”, he asked her “What part of the dog is it, grandma?” I’ve already learned English in my country, Viet Nam, for 10 years. Nevertheless, the English which is spoken by American is so different from what I have learned. So, I tried to improve my English through reading cultural guide-book or cultural magazine in order to avoid a similar Chinese case. Acceptance is the next and also the last step that I have done to get used to American customs. In fact, there are a lot of differences between Vietnamese customs and American customs. However, I tried to say welcome with new things and forget the dissimilarities of customs. For instance, I must queue up when needing to buy or ask something or even catching the bus.
