Dear Mr Freeman,
I am a student at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy. I am writing to you to enlighten you on why your article on ‘Bring Back the Cane to Restore Discipline’ in school is wrong. I will be informing you on why physically punishing students, no abusing students is wrong! This letter will be educating you on why corporal punishment can physically and mentally destroy a victim.
I would like to start with the statement in your article in which you suggest that ‘you’d never find a single teacher at my alma mater quaking in his boots.’ I object with your view that teachers should be given the right to physically discipline children. Giving teachers this right …………….. Is that what you would like for your child? Providing the right for teachers to act in this manner could make them unkind, violent and aggressive. By providing the right to assault a student to teachers, you are giving students the wrong mind set. If students are given this type of negativity, they can take the negativity into their adulthood and start to abuse their children/spouse. I would oppose your statement in which you say ‘as a deterrent, it worked for everyone else too.’ I fail to agree with your argument because there are other ways to discourage students from disobeying the teacher’s orders. Some alternative solutions could be raffle, gifts for excellent manners, merit system and maybe trips to encourage brilliant behaviour. Physically punishing is not the way forward to a modern education system in Britain.
I want to highlight your statement which asserts ‘did the humiliation, shame and red burning mark scorched onto my palm do the trick and ensure my rehabilitation? You bet.’ Acting in this manner could potentially create violent students, cause riots, skip classes and cause suicidal students.
